●Marine propellers are made from corrosion-resistant materials as they are made operational directly in seawater which is a corrosion accelerator. The materials used for making marine propellers are an alloy of aluminium and stainless steel.
●Other popular materials used are alloys of nickel, aluminium and bronze which are 10~15 % lighter than other materials and have higher strength.
●The construction process of the propeller includes attaching a number of blades to the hub or boss by welding or forging in one piece. Forged blades are highly reliable and have greater strength but are expensive as compared to welded ones.
●A marine propeller is constructed by sections of helicoidal surfaces acting together to rotate through the water with a screw effect.
The Propeller Process Flow
Moulding ( wooden pattern for hub, and sand mould for blades),make the upper mould and lower mould for the blades according to the table of offset of the propeller drawing, measure the pitch by the pitch meter in many positions on the blades upper and lower mould, connect the hub mould and blades mould together.
Melting the bronze, analyze the chemical composition of the bronze material by spectrum analyzer, make sure the chemical composition is qualified, make the sample bronze rod and test its physical properties,to make sure the physical propeties is qualified.
Propeller casting, check the defects of the moulds,and heat the moulds before casting. inspect the casting blank quality, measure the dimension of the casting blank,check the casting blank defects, and make the flaw detection.
Machining the shaft hole,double ends of the hub, key way of the hub as per the drawing.
Polishing the blades surface, and hub surface, according the drawing requirements.
Finished product inspection, including dimension inspection, balance testing, pitch measuring.
Install of Cargo Ship Propeller
There are two ways to install the propeller on the shaft, one is keyless installation, the other is keyless installation.
With the continuous development of shipbuilding technology, the keyless installation of propeller and shaft can avoid the stress concentration of shaft caused by machining keyway on propeller shaft, so more and more ships use keyless installation of propeller and gradually replace keyless installation.
The propeller is set on the stern shaft, and the hydraulic nut is installed. The high-pressure oil pumped by the oil pump enters the stern shaft and the conical surface of the propeller through the oil groove of the inner hole of the propeller hub through the high-pressure oil pipe, so that the propeller hub produces elastic deformation and is expanded. At the same time, high pressure oil is supplied to the hydraulic nut, which generates forward thrust and makes the propeller move forward. When the propeller is pushed to the specified position, the high pressure oil of the cone hole of the propeller hub is put first, and then the high pressure oil of the hydraulic nut is released. Due to the recovery of the elastic deformation of the propeller hub, the propeller is closely matched on the stern shaft.
